Managing Water Damage in Merrimack Properties Requires Resources

SERVPRO® Ensures Proper Water Removal from Affected Areas

Water damage in Merrimack properties is a common and often devastating occurrence that can result from various sources. When faced with such a problem, property owners may be tempted to handle it themselves to save money. However, in many cases, effectively managing water damage requires professional resources. Professionals, such as SERVPRO, bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. We can assess the level of damage, identify hidden issues, and develop a comprehensive restoration plan.

A major significant risk associated with water damage in Merrimack is microbial growth. Mold starts to grow within 24-48 hours after water exposure. We understand the importance of swift action to prevent mold proliferation. Our crews have the training to thoroughly dry and disinfect affected areas, reducing the risk of mold infestations. Effective water removal is crucial to limit further damage and microbial growth.

Essential resources and tools for water removal

  • Submersible pumps
  • Wet/Dry Vacuums
  • Squeegees and mops
  • Moisture detection equipment

A submersible pump can rapidly extract large volumes of standing water from flooded areas. It can efficiently pump out water from a basement, crawl space, or other submerged spaces and discharge it away from the affected area.

Thermal imaging cameras are used during the assessment and inspection phase of the water damage restoration. They help us locate hidden moisture pockets within building materials, even if the water is invisible to the naked eye. This allows for targeted drying efforts and prevents secondary damage.

Thorough Drying Is Important

Ensuring all affected areas are thoroughly dried is crucial. Dehumidifiers help reduce humidity levels in the affected area, aiding in drying and preventing mold growth. Our teams make calculations to determine the correct size and capacity of the dehumidifier for the specific location. Overloading a dehumidifier with excess moisture can reduce its effectiveness.

Different kinds of dehumidifiers

  • Conventional refrigerants
  • Low grain refrigerants
  • Desiccants

SERVPRO Offers Water Restoration Services in the Merrimack Area

When appliances malfunction in your home, your dishwasher can sometimes become a culprit. Sometimes, when dishwashers break, they can spray water all over your kitchen. The supply lines running to your dishwasher could also break or leak, which can cause a disaster in your kitchen. If your kitchen's floor fills up with standing water, the moisture could ruin items like your flooring, kitchen cabinets, and walls.

Since multiple supply and drain lines run through your kitchen, it is one room that our SERVPRO technicians find is often the source when conducting water mitigation inside your Merrimack home. If a mishap floods your kitchen, it could also spread to other rooms in your house. Standing water in your kitchen can also raise the relative humidity level in your building and cause secondary issues in places that do not come into contact with moisture.

Services we can offer after your kitchen floods out:

  • Pump out standing water that is deeper than two inches using a submersible pump
  • Use a mop and squeegee to remove moisture from laminated floors
  • Use a heavy-duty extractor and weighted extraction tool to extract moisture from thick carpets
  • Set up injection drying machines to dry out wall cavities
  • Use drying mats on hardwood floors to prevent coupling
  • Set up air movers to push air into cabinets
  • Applied structural drying (ASD)

If your kitchen's relative humidity level rises, your cabinets could be negatively affected. Moisture can also leak into your cabinets from the inside out, becoming prime spots for mold growth. We can use fans or air movers to push air inside your cabinets which will speed up the natural evaporation process. Dehumidifiers can then pull all the moisture out of the air to aid the drying process.

If you ever notice standing water on your floors after your dishwasher malfunctions, call SERVPRO of Merrimack at (603) 262-9293.

Effective Water Cleanup For Carpeting In Amherst Homes

Overflows in the bathroom or the kitchen of your Amherst home can initially stay contained to the waterproof flooring common to the construction of these areas. After only a brief period, this water can begin to spread to neighboring rooms and seep through carpeting to affect subflooring materials and floor support materials. It is important to address water loss incidents quickly in your home, as lingering moisture can prove devastating to structural integrity and provide the conditions necessary for damaging effects like mold growth.

While you might require water cleanup for your Amherst home, your carpets require specialized tools and equipment to restore. Our SERVPRO professionals have a mindset when we begin a project to protect and preserve original materials when possible. With carpeting, there is a finite timespan between saturation and irreparable damage, so immediate action is vital to prevent tear-out and replacement.

With water loss incidents, assessing the damage is an important step that happens as soon as our technicians arrive at your home. We can determine the spread of the water with moisture detection equipment and thermal imagery. As it is easy for carpet fibers to absorb spreading water, this damage can quickly move beyond the base of the material and into subflooring or structural elements beneath it. Extraction and drying efforts must begin as soon as possible.

Our SERVPRO team arrives with our ROVER weighted extractor equipment that can roll over carpeted areas and force water to the surface for removal by the high-powered vacuum attached to the system. Once saturation gets reduced, our team can float the carpeted areas by allowing our high-velocity air movers to force heated air beneath the carpet and above the subflooring material to maximize efficiency.

With many steps necessary to remove the water and moisture damage from an overflow or appliance malfunction, you need professionals who can arrive quickly with the tools and expertise to make a difference. Our SERVPRO of Merrimack water restoration specialists can make the damage in your home “Like it never even happened.” Give our crew a call today at (603) 262-9293.

Drying and Sealing a Wet Basement in Merrimack

8/9/2022 (Permalink)

drawing of basement; including water heater and stairs Call SERVPRO to thoroughly inspect your basement for water damage and seal it to prevent flood damage.

Preventing Flood Damage in Your Basement

Fall is here now, and it is time to check basements for leaks and seepage. Merrimack has been fortunate this year regarding weather, but that does not mean it is OK to skip regular inspections and maintenance.

Dealing with a wet basement in Merrimack is not the worst disaster to work through, but it can still be a nuisance and an expensive nuisance at worst. SERVPRO has the know-how to not just clean and dry your basement but to help you stop future water intrusions as well.

A wet basement usually has two sources: a leaky pipe draining into the basement or seepage from outside the foundation. Our technicians are trained to remove and replace most interior leaks. We can accomplish this within a few hours, while major leaks or pipe replacement could take a day or two. Once we stop the water source, we use water extraction wands to remove water trapped in carpets or cracks on the floor. As we perform this task, other restoration team members set up dehumidifiers to dry the surrounding air.

When the water is coming in from the outside, we recommend two options, depending on the type of basement. If the area has a dirt floor, we recommend encapsulation. With this process, SERVPRO technicians seal the floor with polyester mesh reinforcing polyethylene sheets. This water vapor barrier effectively prevents moisture from bleeding from the ground. We secure the sheets to the basement walls using two-sided foundation tape or polyurethane caulk. We also install a frame along the bottom of the walls if needed for extra support.

If the basement has a concrete floor, then we recommend waterproofing. Our IICRC-certified technicians seal every crack and seam with hydraulic cement. It forms a near-perfect barrier against leaks. Once it is dry, we apply masonry cement over the entire surface of the basement walls. The coating is waterproof and forms a very efficient seal against cracks too small to see and seepage that can come between cement blocks and mortar.

Regardless of the type of basement, SERVPRO also recommends sealing  the outside walls. We dig out around the foundation, clean the walls, and then coat them with a thick layer of commercial-grade liquid rubber. It is an excellent sealant, even in extreme weather, and does not leak unless the foundation cracks or the house shifts off the pad.

With any disaster, the best way to stop it is to prevent it from happening. SERVPRO of Merrimack is ready to help seal your basement from future water intrusions and remove any water that could be in your basement now. For more information or to schedule an inspection, call us today at (603) 262-9293.

Water Damage Restoration for Mt. Vernon

7/10/2022 (Permalink)

rusty metal on wall area Don't let water damage your home or warehouse in Mt. Vernon--call SERVPRO, "Like it never even happened."

Mt. Vernon Rapid Water Extraction Mitigates Water Damage to Your Property

Floods can cause massive damage to any home, causing immediate damage but also leaving behind copious amounts of water, which can go on to cause further problems. Failed plumbing leaves volumes of standing water on surfaces and belongings. SERVPRO brings large, industrial-grade tools such as water extractors and air movers to water removal jobs to return to a preloss state as quickly as possible.

Warping

One of the most noticeable effects of slow water removal in Mt. Vernon is the warping of flooring and other materials. We help to minimize these effects by treating wood and other materials early on. If warping does occur, it may be repairable but often makes the restoration job much more complex and expensive.

Mold

Mold growth is one of the biggest reasons to seek fast treatment after water damage in your home. Almost all mold damage that would normally result from a flood is avoidable if water is removed quickly enough. On the other hand, slow responses can lead to massive mold infestations that can cost thousands more to remediate. Hiring a well-equipped and broadly certified company like SERVPRO means that you have extra lines of defense for preventing mold proliferation caused by residual moisture.

Oxidation

One component of our water removal process is dehumidification. While this may seem a time and money-intensive method with little reward, it is critical in preventing metals from oxidizing. Many metals can tarnish and weaken when exposed to high humidity and water levels, including materials like iron, which are used commonly and widely throughout American homes. Rusting can significantly compromise structural components.

Tips for Performing Water Damage Repair in Merrimack

Hiring a Company SERVPRO is the Right Water to Handle Water Damage in Merrimack

Water damage is a common issue for homeowners, and it comes in different levels of severity. Whether it’s a small leak or a major water intrusion incident, it is reassuring to have professionals to assist you in bringing normalcy back to your life. SERVPRO offers restoration services around the clock.

Knowing that water damage in your Merrimack residence can lead to the destruction of structures and contents, we can quickly come to your aid. We can use sophisticated equipment, specialized techniques to restore your home. This process includes:

  • Removing ruined components
  • Water removal
  • Cleaning and disinfection of salvageable contents
  • Drying the space

Removal of Ruined Components

Our SERVPRO restoration team can evaluate if it is possible to decontaminate ruined structures and contents or if it is necessary to remove and replace them. The decision to replace or restore depends on pretest results, the nature of the contamination, and the material's porosity.

Water Removal

If your carpet sustained water damage, we could use carpet wands to extract the water. These devices are appropriate for the initial water extraction from glue-down carpets. They are also useful for removing residual water on the surface of carpets after restorers have used a stationary tool.

Cleaning and Disinfection of Salvageable Contents

We perform a cleanup of contamination before beginning restorative drying. However, our SERVPRO team provides humidity control in contaminated areas to reduce moisture migration, microbial amplification, and potential secondary damage. We set up and turn on dehumidifiers to reduce the humidity within the affected areas.

Drying the Affected Areas

Our SERVPRO restorers can dry out the affected surfaces using air movers and refrigerant dehumidifiers. These dehumidifiers work almost the same way as air conditioners work. They use the dew point principle to eliminate water vapor from the air. The cold refrigerant is pumped through coils, and the moist air in the area that is being dried gets moved across the cold evaporator coils. As the dehumidifiers cool air at or below the dew point, water vapor condenses on the cold coils and fins. The water drains off the fins into a collection tank and is pumped out of the home.

What Can Limit Structural Damage From Frozen Pipes and Ice Damming in Merrimack Homes?

12/13/2021 (Permalink)

Ice dam Frozen pipes and Ice damming can be a real problem in your home, call SERVPRO for assistance right away.

SERVPRO Can Help You Contain the Strain From Freezing and the Deterioration From Water Exposure

Despite the frigid temperatures, there is much to enjoy in winter. The icicles dangling on the eaves of your house are a beautiful sight. However, some of these things you enjoy or ignore can have hidden risks that cause problems, including structural damage to your Merrimack home.

Preventing frozen pipes and ice damming at your Merrimack home is the desirable goal, although it is not always attainable. The next best option is preventing damages to the structure, contents, and any other material within the property. SERVPRO handles incidents involving freezing regularly and thus understands the damages likely to develop in your home.

Damages From Ice Dams and Frozen Pipes Include:

  • Burst pipes
  • Torn gutters
  • Loose shingles
  • Widespread moisture damage

Freezing puts structural materials under intense strain leading to failure. For instance, when water freezes inside a pipe, it expands rapidly, and if faucets are not turned on, there is no room. The pipe, whether plastic or metal, may end up bursting. For roofs, expanding ice lifts shingles, compromising the seals and thus allowing water into the house, leading to traditional moisture damage

If the pipe freeze or ice dam is already there, finding a solution that eliminates it without damaging the structure is essential. Pinpointing the problem and using a gentle approach to resolve it is the best way to prevent structural damage. SERVPRO technicians can help identify frozen pipes even in concealed areas. We can also check whether an ice dam is leaking water into your attic.

Some of the Solutions we Deliver Include:

  • Providing heating around frozen pipes using space heaters
  • Blowing cold air into the attic to stop a leak from ice dams
  • Raking the roof with a specialized aluminum roof rake with wheels

Fixing insulation problems after addressing the immediate risks is necessary for long-term results.

SERVPRO of Merrimack can help save your home from the effects of frozen pipes and ice damming. Call us at (603) 262-9293. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Why Can't I Do My Own Water Removal for My Carpet?

10/29/2021 (Permalink)

a person pulling up water damaged carpeting Water damage can quickly affect the carpets in your home. Contact our certified team 24/7 for effective water removal efforts.

DIY efforts can leave water behind in your Merrimack carpet, SERVPRO can remove the water completely

When water damage happens in a home that includes carpeting, the timer starts ticking on the damage. This is because water degrades rapidly, and after 48 hours, the carpet will most likely be damaged and require removal and disposal.

What is the Difference Between DIY and Professional Water Extraction?

DIY water removal in Merrimack homes using standard household tools such as wet/dry vacs or mops has the potential to leave water behind. Other problems that can occur are:

  • Inability to extract water from under carpet can ruin the pad and backing
  • Tile and floating floors with water trapped underneath can delaminate
  • Cannot get water that migrated behind walls
  • Inadequate removal can lead to foul odors or mold growth

The professional extraction equipment used by SERVPRO gets chosen based on the type of surfaces they are working on. The techs use various types of extraction methods for the best outcome, using guidelines from the IICRC Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification. For example, their portable pumps have the pulling power to remove deeply embedded water within both carpet and padding.

Drying Methods to Save Carpet

After the water removal efforts, the drying process is another difference. Household fans do not have the power that professional drying equipment possesses. Additionally, the techs use specialized methods to dry the carpet in place, such as floating. This application involves loosening one side of the carpet and positioning air movers to force air underneath. This dries the carpet from the bottom up.

When a small area of the carpet is affected by water, the techs also utilize tenting. A plastic barrier gets positioned over the damaged area, and the air is directed into the wet carpet. In both applications, dehumidification equipment gets used to grab airborne water vapor and port it away.

SERVPRO of Merrimack at (603) 262-9293 stands ready to help local properties with water removal needs 24/7.

Can Dehumidifiers Dry a Wet Property in Merrimack?

9/20/2021 (Permalink)

ceiling leak Water damage restoration for your home could be a problem. SERVPRO IICRC certified techs are trained and experienced in all phases of water damage.

What is the Fastest Way to Dry a Wet Property?

Dehumidification can speed up the drying process, but for efficient drying and mitigation, SERVPRO uses water removal equipment. This equipment can be up to 900 times more effective.

Drying a property relies on using the right resources and equipment. Most Merrimack water restorers opt for extraction equipment over dehumidification because it provides quick results. A water extractor, sometimes referred to as hot water extraction, uses a heating element combined with negative air pressure. Usually, this equipment is fitted to a truck mount, which provides the necessary power for both vacuuming and heating. At the return side of the equipment, a restorer can use a range of fittings to remove water from walls, carpeting, fabrics, or furnishing. Water extractors using light-wands are useful for areas of restrictive access.

Is Equipment Essential in Drying a Property?

  • Submersible water pumps have a range of versatile uses for both solid waste and subterranean water removal
  • Hot water extractors which can be adapted to the requirements of the situation
  • Rapid air-movers can help to promote airflow, which encourages evaporation

Is Dehumidification Necessary to Dry Out Indoor Spaces?

One of the risks of drying a wet property is that evaporating moisture can raise relative humidity. Higher levels of humidity can result in condensation damages as well as microbial growth concerns. SERVPRO uses dehumidifiers in a property to maintain control over conditions while applying more effective drying equipment like axial air-movers. The average time to completely dry property is around five days. However, molds can reach full growth in as little as seventy-two hours in the right conditions. Therefore, it is essential to maintain control over indoor humidity levels to prevent secondary damage while conducting primary water restoration.

Leaks can cause hidden damage that requires professional water mitigation

Merrimack, NH, is a town rich in Native American history. Archeological finds indicate people were dwelling in the area after the ice age, but the Pennacook people were the predominant Indian tribe living in the region in later years. The town got its name from the tribe’s word for sturgeon. The Merrimack River was once teaming with the fish, and the Pennacook named the river after the bounty. This river has played an important role in the development of the region due to floodings.

Local Flooding of Importance

Though residents are generally concerned about water removal after a faulty plumbing mishap, Merrimack was almost at the epicenter for the famous locally named Mother’s Day Flood, the New England Flood of May 2006. The floodwaters overran the banks, covering many surrounding homes with sludge and volumes of groundwater.

Who Owns the Land?

The ownership of the region was under dispute in the late 17th century. The Massachusetts Bay Colony and the Province of New Hampshire were both making claims. That didn’t stop European settlers from coming and making it their home. It was good land, and people were eager to make a new life for themselves. In 1746 the boundary lines were re-examined, and the land in Massachusetts was granted to New Hampshire. The town was known as Naticook at that time.

A Town is Born

When the town was incorporated on April 2, 1746, it took on the name of Merrymac.  The current spelling was used later. When Governor Benning Wentworth issued the charter, roughly 50 families were living in the area. Native Americans flourished in the area as well. They included:

  • Pennacook
  • Pawtucket
  • Nashaway

Places of Historical Importance

Like many New England towns, Merrimac is rich in history. One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Matthew Thornton, lived his entire life in Merrimack. Today, Thornton’s home, now the Common Man Restaurant, and the Matthew Thornton cemetery are still standing and welcome visitors.

Villages Make Up A Town

Merrimack was made up of 4 villages originally, although boundaries are somewhat vague due to modern development. They are:

  • Thorntons Ferry
  • Reeds Ferry
  • South Merrimac
  • Merrimac Village

SERVPRO Proudly Provides Water Mitigation to Merrimack Residents

Sinks can develop slow leaks that can cause hidden water damage to cabinets, flooring, and other material. When this happens, getting professional water damage assistance is vital. When this type of problem occurs, our technicians:

  • Evaluate the levels of water damaged content
  • Track these levels with tools such as moisture meters
  • Trace the source of the water if not already known
  • Extract the water and dry the area

The tools used for water extraction and drying depends on the level of damage but can include light wands, pumps, air movers, and dehumidifiers. If necessary controlled demolition is used to restore structural elements.

SERVPRO of Merrimack is a Local Team of Expert Restoration Technicians.

The town of Merrimack is located within the largest county in New Hampshire State, Hillsborough. This area's common nicknames are the Granite State due to its abundance of quarries and geologically significant rock formations. But the site here goes by another name, The Switzerland of America named so because of its sublime mountain ranges and rivers that run from New England. Merrimack refers to the Sturgeon fish found in massive numbers in the nearby river and is taken from the Pennacook language describing said fish. There is evidence of settlements alongside the Merrimack river dating back to the first ice age. Modern history shows colonial settlements being first established in the mid-seventeenth century with numerous historical importance sites dotted about the 33.4 square miles that make up the town boundaries. The Signer's House in South Merrimack was the former home of the Declaration of Independence signatory Matthew Thornton and remains the only example of period architecture from the 1780s in the state. The adjacent cemetery and Georgian house are preserved by the Historical Society of Merrimack and have listings with the Register of Historic Places.

Merrimack remained a relatively small community until the 19th century, made up of four distinct villages, including South Merrimack, Thorntons Ferry, Reeds Ferry, and Merrimack Village. However, with the invention and subsequent mass production of automobiles, it transformed into a commuter belt for those working in the larger urban areas like Boston. One of the largest employers in the area is Anheuser-Busch, which runs Budweiser breweries that are open to the public for tours and tastings. There are several excellent state parks, including the Wildcat Falls Park and the Twin Bridge Park. The proximity of mountain regions and the Merrimack Valley ensures a passing trade of outdoor enthusiasts who can take the opportunity to go skiing during the winter months and hiking trails and cycle rides. Reeds Ferry remains an excellent shopping destination with routes as an early trading outpost while historic sites can prove popular with tourists throughout the year. America's Stonehenge, located in nearby Salem, shows monolithic stone structures that pre-date Christopher Columbus's arrival and mimic those found in early Britain. These structures are the oldest examples of appearances on North American soil.

  • The Anheuser-Busch Brewery just off the Daniel Webster Highway in Merrimack originally opened in 1970 and celebrates its 50th year in 2020. The brewery here produces world-famous brands, including Budweiser, Bud Light, Redbridge, and Butsch beers. Set among Merrimack county's hillsides, visitors can enjoy a two-hour tour taking them through the brewing process from hop to pint glass.
  • The Signer's House and Thornton Cemetery was initiated into the Register of Historic Places in 1978. It is a Georgian period structure initially built in 1780 and was the home to Declaration of Independence Signer George Thornton. Walking tours are conducted through these historic sites showing the burial sites and educating the public on the Ferry landing, which overlooks near Litchfield.
  • The Twin Bridge Park and Kids Kove is a small public park for picnicking and taking kids down to the nearby Brook. There is ample parking for a weekend trip, while the relatively short walking trails are ideal for short hikes with young children. The park was established around thirty years ago and remained a popular day out for residents.

Eating out at Merrimack's American Diners and Restaurants.

  • Merrimack's cuisine is typically American tradition, with much of the produce sourced from the nearby Merrimack River and surrounding green lands. The primary foods here are warm and welcoming plates of seafood and steaks with many locations featuring excellent outdoor eating patios during the summer months.
  • Buckley's Great Steaks is on the more expensive side of the culinary offerings in Merrimack, which is situated on the Daniel Webster Highway nearby to the Anheuser-Busch brewery. The atmospheric dining room features a Tudor-style beamed ceiling, while the menu is a delightful offering of prime cuts.
  • The Common Man Restaurant just down the road from Buckleys is a hub for the local community who share a taste for American hamburgers, sides, and salads. The upstairs bar is typically friendly and welcoming for both locals and visitors passing through.
  • For seafood, Lobster Boat Restaurant is the go-to venue for great food and excellent service. What the Lobster Boat lacks in a high-end atmosphere, it more than makes up for in simple, fresh-produce that is cooked to perfection. A hole in the wall type eatery for those looking for a non-touristy dining spot.

Merrimack town hall sign Merrimack depends on SERVPRO for water damage restoration--ask the residents!

Merrimack Is a Perfect Destination for Getting Back to Nature

Merrimack is a lovely New England town, with a population of a little over 25,000 people. It is the perfect size to have plenty of amenities for residents and visitors alike while still being small enough to retain a classic New England charm. The great outdoors are never far away in Merrimack, and it offers ample opportunity for fresh air, exercise, and the peace and quiet that comes with getting back to nature.

There is evidence that Merrimack was settled as long ago as just after the last ice age! The settlement was beside a river called Monnomoke or Merramake, which is a First Nations term for sturgeon, a type of fish that was very common in the Merrimack River. By the time the town was incorporated, the river was known as the Merrymac, and the city took its name.

Merrimack enjoyed a boom in the nineteenth century when a railroad was built in town, and a new town hall was put up. These days Merrimack is a thriving community made up of four distinct areas that call to mind the old days when each was a separate village:

  • South Merrimack occupies the Southwestern part of town, near the Boston Post Road.
  • Reed Ferry, in the Northern part of town, is situated beside Merrimack River and is also close to Baboosic Lake.
  • Thornton's Ferry is situated beside peaceful Nanticook Lake. It is named after Matthew Thornton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
  • Merrimack Village sits between Reed Ferry and Thorntons Ferry and contains the library, town hall, and several schools. It is beside the Souhegan River.

Enjoying the Great Outdoors in Merrimack

Merrimack has hiking trails, horseback riding, and mountain biking paths galore. Here are some of the best places to explore nature in and around Merrimack:

  • Wildcat Falls Park and Conservation Area is the place to go for outdoor activities. There are miles of walking trails that include powerful river rapids, a dramatic waterfall, and lots of peaceful woodlands. Grab a free map at the entrance and enjoy exploring – just be careful of the steep drops around the falls.
  • Twin Bridge Park and Kids Kove is perfect if you are looking for something a little less strenuous than Wildcat Falls. There's an easy trail suitable for all the family beside the river, plus a wooden playground that provides hours of fun for the kids.
  • Wasserman Park is a family-friendly dog park where you can enjoy watching lots of beautiful breeds even if you are not a dog owner yourself. The park offers basketball and tennis courts, grill pits, and docks to swim from or sunbathe on.

Time your visit right, and you will be able to catch the Fourth of July parade or the annual Rock’n Ribfest, a family event with live music and delicious ribs prepared in all kinds of ways.

There Is Indoor Fun on Tap Too

If the weather changes or you are ready to sit down, Merrimack has plenty of indoor attractions too. Kids will love Nuthin' But Good Times, a family event center with an indoor playground, a cafe, and even relaxing massage chairs for tired kids.

If you need refreshment, Hayward's Ice Cream has been producing delicious ice cream for over 70 years now, and word is they are very good at it. Adults will love a trip to Anheuser-Busch brewery, where you can take a tour, sample many different beers, and stop off at the gift shop. Or if you are looking for a bargain, look no further than Merrimack Premium Outlets, where you will find over 100 designer stores offering deep discounts.

Historic Flooding on The Merrimack River

One of the few downsides of living near a beautiful river like the Merrimack is the risk of flooding. Merrimack's situation near other rivers and lakes puts it at an additional chance of a flood incident. There have been several such incidents in history:

  • In March 1936, a double flood of rainwater and melting snow raised the Merrimack level to 20.8 m at Lowell.
  • The New England Hurricane of 1938 was one of the most deadly hurricanes in the area and caused flooding on the Merrimack.
  • On May 15, 2006, New England was hit by severe flooding. Excessive rainfall raised the Merrimack 2.8 m above flood levels, triggering evacuations and causing extensive property damage.

The Merrimack does not flood often, but it still carries some flood risk and with it all the inconvenience and stress that comes with flooding. Thankfully SERVPRO is on hand to help residents if such a flood ever happens again. We can also help with flooding caused by garden run-off, heavy rainstorms, or indoor disasters such as plumbing leaks or broken appliances.

How Does SERVPRO Deal with Raw Sewage in Flood Situations?

When the Merrimack flooded in 2006, the floodwater force broke the main sewage pipeline at the city of Haverhill, MA, causing 35 million gallons of raw sewage to flow into the river daily.

Raw sewage is a particularly distressing side effect of flooding in your home. If you are looking for water companies near you in Merrimack, be sure to choose one like SERVPRO with the experience to handle raw sewage:

  • We act quickly because the longer we leave contaminated water, the greater the health risk.
  • We equip all our technicians with all the personal protective equipment they need to handle a raw sewage situation. This includes waders, long rubber gloves, aprons, full bodysuits, and ventilators.
  • We quickly dispose of all contaminated building materials, rugs, drapes, and furniture, to decontaminate your home.
  • We offer full health and safety training to all our staff.

When your home is dry and decontaminated, we deodorize it. We use activated carbon filters, HEPA filters, air scrubbers, and specially formulated pellets to remove odors from your home and leave it "Like it never even happened."

If you are thinking of water companies near you, think of SERVPRO of Merrimack. We are on hand to deal with any flood or contamination situation you may face. Call us at (603) 262-9293.

Can I Afford the Cost of Restoration?

5/1/2020 (Permalink)

Man consulting with SERVPRO technician No matter when you make the call, we have technicians who can assist you.

SERVPRO works with you and your Insurance company.

Once homeowners get over the initial shock of finding a water leak in their home, most begin to worry about the cost of restoration. How much are the restoration and repairs going to cost? Can their budget afford it? Can they cut any corners? Does their homeowner's insurance cover everything? These and other questions can quickly overwhelm people.

SERVPRO provides water damage services in Merrimack, as well as restoration and repair  and surrounding areas. We have been providing water damage services for many years. Our experience and technical certifications, combined with 24/7 availability and 4-hour response times, are aimed at mitigating the damage and controlling the total cost of recovery. There may be an additional cost and even health issues if homeowners do not take the proper steps to remove all moisture from their homes.

Making Informed Decisions

One of the first actions our crew chief takes upon arriving at your home is to complete an assessment of the damage. We make sure that the source of the water is under control, and we develop a plan to remove standing water, remove the moisture, and lower the humidity. If repairs are required, these can also be discussed with the homeowner and the insurance company adjuster. We prepare an estimate of the cost to complete all of this work.

Homeowners can quickly decide in conjunction with the insurance adjuster what action should be undertaken. Note that it is essential to act quickly to avoid long term damage to floors such as hardwood floors and also the growth of mold and mildew in your home. SERVPRO can deploy a team of people within hours of the initial leak to mitigate the damage.

Homeowners without insurance coverage must carefully decide what action to take. Delays or taking no action at all can lead to costly damage more significant than the initial cleanup and drying. Hardwood flooring can cup, crown, or crack, leading to total replacement. Cabinet structures may swell, become unsightly, and lose structural integrity. Worst of all, mold infestations may appear, leading to structural damage, health issues, and very unsightly looking conditions. All of these conditions can be much costlier to repair. SERVPRO can help homeowners understand these issues and make appropriate decisions for their situation.

Call SERVPRO of Merrimack at (603) 262-9293 for 24/7 service. We proudly serve Mt Vernon, Amherst, and surrounding areas. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Why Is Standing Water a Concern for My Merrimack Home?

4/17/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO drying equipment being used in water damaged room When water invades your home, SERVPRO to the rescue! We know how to dry and restore your water damaged home.

Our SERVPRO Professionals Can Help to Remove Standing Water and Dry Your House Before Irreparable Damage Occurs

Following a flood or substantial water loss that could occur in your house, it is crucial to focus on removing standing water first. As much of a priority as this should be, many homeowners are ill-prepared for this mitigation step. To successfully achieve the removal of standing water in your Merrimack house, it involves the union of sophisticated extraction tools and experienced restoration technicians.

Water removal for Merrimack homes involves the use of multiple extraction tools in our inventory. Finding the right tool for a specific job is a determination made during the scoping of the work to get done. During this initial phase that precedes mitigation, our crew chief and project manager can work with the customer to determine pre-existing conditions, the extent of the damage, and the most efficient extraction and drying solutions available.

What Are the Main Risks of Standing Water in My Home?

Standing water is an underappreciated threat to your home. Pooling water, regardless of its depth, can have destructive effects unexposed materials, contents, and other susceptible items. Addressing standing water first can help too limited some of the damaging effects that could take place, including:

Structural Weaknesses

Overexposure to standing water over extended periods can lead to a weakening of construction materials in your home. It is essential to note which materials might be deteriorating and highly saturated after water exposure. Saturation can make materials much more massive, which tests the limitations of fasteners like drywall screws and nails.

Migration

The movement of water throughout your home after a water loss incident can be a challenge to identify adequately. Getting ahead of this migration is vital, as it can limit how many materials and contents in your home become exposed to damage.

Oversaturation

Much like heavier saturations can deteriorate materials like drywall, over saturation of materials like carpeting and wood flooring can lead to specific problems of their own. With prolonged exposure, water can penetrate the surface layer of carpeting, affecting both the padding underneath this layer and even penetrate the subflooring.

Excessive Demolition

It is consistently a priority of our SERVPRO team to limit controlled demolition and later reconstruction of your damaged home. The fast response when the extraction is needed can help to mitigate the water loss event in Merrimack  and prevent unnecessary demolition when possible.

How Can SERVPRO Remove Pooling Water?

As briefly mentioned, the focus of our responding technicians is removing standing water from damaged areas of your home as soon as possible. Our team can go about this in several ways, and it varies based on the severity of the damage, the location of the standing water, and its depth. We have multiple tools to help in this regard, but the most commonly used are:

  • Submersible pumps
  • Wet vacuums
  • Squeegee wands

What Happens to Water-Damaged Items in My House?

Content management is another vital aspect of the immediate work that we can do when we arrive at a water damaged house. By assessing the water damage to your personal property, we can make real-time drying decisions and recovery choices based on what these items need. In many situations, there are upwards of three primary categories the content recovery can fall into, including:

On-Site Relocation

Relocating items in a house to a safer area within the structure can be the most efficient method of protecting your belongings when no other damage is present. This solution is only suitable when no other physical damage is identifiable on the individual items.

Cleaning

Cleaning up individual belongings might seem like a tedious approach, but it can help to reduce out-of-pocket expenses for our customers. By drying and surface cleaning damaged items in the house, we can have items better prepared for replacement in the home following the completion of restoration and mitigation phases.

Off-Site Recovery

In some situations, on-site recovery is not feasible. If more intricate cleaning and restoration are necessary, items can get relocated to our nearby SERVPRO facility for the attention they need.

How Fast is Drying After Water Removal?

While our team has much experience and training in drying sciences, there are too many variables to say with certainty how long drying processes typically take. We must determine where moisture exists and utilize our advanced tools to remove it from the house as quickly as possible. With equipment like high-velocity air movers and positive pressure systems, we can get you back in your home quickly after a loss incident.

Water loss incidents can be a challenge to overcome, even for experienced restoration technicians like our SERVPRO of Merrimack professionals. Give us a call anytime that we can help with our sophisticated equipment and experienced technicians. We are ready 24/7 at (603) 262-9293.

When Water Damage Causes Water Growth in Merrimack

Water damaged wall and floor. Mold growing on floor. Unchecked water damage can lead to mold growth. Inspect your home often for water leaks.

Water Damage Merrimack – Avoiding Mold Growth

Whenever water penetrates the structure of a home around windows and doors or perhaps there is a water leak, insufficient drying can lead to the growth of mold infestations. Mold spores are constantly in the air. Mold spores prefer warm moist conditions where there are lots of food sources typically found in homes.

SERVPRO has been providing water damage mitigation and recovery for Merrimack and surrounding areas for several decades. We  train our technicians to thoroughly dry the contents and structure of your home every time there is a water event. SERVPRO knows how important it is to limit moisture hot spots that can provide a perfect set of conditions for mold growth. We are available on a 24 hour / 7-day basis and usually on-site in less than four hours from the initial call.

Moisture and Mold

Initially, most consumers are concerned about the damage a water leak is doing to their carpets, their flooring, and exposed contents. Many attempts to dry their home themselves only to find a few days later, mold growing on surfaces within their home. Mold spores can develop high concentrations in a moist environment and cause health effects for many people with existing respiratory problems.

SERVPRO investigates all potential areas of your home to ensure that we return all moisture and humidity to normal levels. We use water extractors on carpeting, and utilize air movers to blow air under carpets, inside walls, and around furniture. The air absorbs moisture, which is then removed by dehumidifiers placed in your home.

We also check any areas where water may have seeped. For example, under the kitchen or laundry room cupboards, inside walls behind baseboards are checked using moisture meters. If we find significant moisture inside walls, we may drill holes in the walls near the floor to circulate air or make a flood cut to remove water and moisture inside the wall.

SERVPRO ensures that all areas of your home are dried before we leave. We also have contractor services available to help complete any repairs that are needed and avoid unnecessary delays.

Call SERVPRO of Merrimack at (603) 262-9293 for 24/7 service. We proudly serve Milford, Amherst, and surrounding areas. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Proper Drying Can Save Your Water Damaged Home In Merrimack

water damaged flooring We know what it takes to make such an incident seem, “Like it never even happened.”

Proper Drying of Your Merrimack Home after Water Damage Can Prevent Further Destruction

A water intrusion problem can destroy most of the structures and contents in your home and hazardous to the health of your family. Dealing with water damage in your property can be a hassle, but SERVPRO can help. We are the restoration experts Merrimack residents turn to when water has penetrated their homes.

Regardless of what has caused water damage in your Merrimack residence, our technicians can provide effective restoration solutions, which include assessing the damage, providing cost estimates, and performing cleanup and repairs. Our team can fix the underlying issue and restore your property to its original condition.

After a water loss incident, the subflooring, baseboards, and drywall, among other surfaces, can absorb water. Both primary and secondary damage can occur when water pools in your home. Primary destruction happens when materials come into contact with water. Secondary damage occurs when materials are exposed to water vapor. Materials that readily absorb water vapor from the air and hold on to it are likelier to sustain secondary water damage. They include upholstery, carpet, and insulation.

To dry affected surfaces, it is necessary to use high-velocity air movers to speed up the release of absorbed water into the air. Dehumidifiers are also required to remove the excess moisture from the air to create conditions for efficient drying and help protect your property. A combination of factors determines the time it takes to dry a property completely. They include:

    •    The location of the water damage
    •    The duration that water sat in a property
    •    Types of affected building materials
    •    Weather conditions

Our SERVPRO team monitors the drying equipment to ensure it achieves the optimal results within the shortest time possible. The drying equipment should remain on for the duration of time it takes to dry the affected materials. If necessary, we can adjust the temperature in your home to the right setting for proper drying conditions. Avoid changing the settings or shutting off the HVAC system because doing so can prolong the drying process.

During the drying process, you may smell unusual odors. Increased humidity and heat can lead to increased smells, which could be emanating from the drying building materials. You should not confuse them with the scent of mold. As humidity levels drop and the drying process continues, the odors often subside on their own. We can also use deodorizers to reduce these effects.

Do not let a water intrusion incident stress you out. Call SERVPRO of Merrimack at (603) 262-9293 for prompt water cleanup and drying services. We know what it takes to make such an incident seem, “Like it never even happened.”

The Different Forms Of Water Damage That Can Occur In Your Amherst Home

Call us at (603) 262-9293 for fast and professional service that you can depend on for excellent results.

Different Forms Of Water Damage Can Reduce The Value, Safety, And Appearance Of Your Home In Amherst

Living comfortably in your home in Amherst requires routine cleaning and also regular maintenance. Finding small leaks or drips along water lines means making the necessary repairs. Placing a pan or bucket underneath the drip can give you time to find a wrench and other tools, but you should not rely on this for more than a few hours, at most. Receptacles fill quickly, and spills from overflows or a knocked-over bucket can happen.

We want to explain how the different components of a home in Amherst might exhibit water damage or long-term exposure to moisture. Our building services department includes the restoration of flooring, helping save you money and preserve the look of your home.

Depending on the type of flooring, and many homes contain more than one style, water can cause permanent damage to wood floors, as well as tile and linoleum. Drywall, plaster, and paneling dry more quickly in the absence of vapor-barrier paints and wallpapers. Restoring furniture that you have invested in can cost much less than replacing the same pieces.

When wood floors soak up water, they can end up deformed. Crowning happens to wooden boards after water sits on the top and soaks in, swelling the top portion like a sponge. Cupping, on the other hand, comes from water sitting underneath and between the boards, raising their edges. This can lead to someone tripping over the uneven surface, increased accumulation of dirt, and uneven wearing of any carpeting or rugs laid over the area. Slow and steady drying of such floors removes the moisture and significantly decreases how much damage becomes permanent.

Where SERVPRO technicians find saturated or damp walls, we examine the interior for stagnant water, as this can cause a range of issues, including unwanted odors. Draining, when necessary, followed by drying the wall from the interior cavity with our Injectidry system. This can help bypass any vapor barriers that would block drying currents from our air movers. Rapidly drying walls and ceilings can keep damp drywall from falling apart, as well as minimize stains. Paneling generally responds well when dried quickly, with little warping or discoloration.

Upholstered furniture in your home contains more wood than just the visible trim. The frame, hidden inside the upholstered areas, can succumb to water damage by cracking, splitting, or warping. These changes can ruin your furniture and make it unsafe to use. We use drying chambers to ensure even and complete drying of your furnishings. Glossy wooden surfaces often require an application of lemon oil to restore their natural balance and prevent stripping away of the finish.

SERVPRO of Merrimack’s skilled technicians know how to make your home “Like it never even happened” after water damage takes its toll on your property. Call us at (603) 262-9293 for fast and professional service that you can depend on for excellent results.

A Primer on How Dry Your Water Damaged Merrimack Home

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

A broken water line caused water to pool on the floor and travel to the subfloor. We used our injectidry system to remove water.

Steps Necessary for Thorough Water Removal in Merrimack

Water damage happens fast considering a burst plumbing line or a faulty appliance can release gallons of water inside your home in a matter of minutes. When done correctly, water removal can help restore the home to its preloss state. Several processes are necessary to achieve the intended goal.

Water keeps moving through gravity and other forces once it spills, so thorough water removal in Merrimack is only possible after identifying all wet areas. Scoping the areas affected by spilled water is easier said than done, considering water filters into concealed areas and is absorbed by porous materials. Our Water Restoration Technicians (WTR) from SERVPRO, rely on their training and sophisticated equipment to trace excess moisture and locate wet areas. We check humidity levels inside and outside the structure using thermo-hygrometers. We also have thermal cameras to find wet areas concealed behind walls or other solid materials.

Various methods can help remove water from a flooded house. Choosing the right method helps expedite the process reducing the impact of the incident. The main removal methods are extraction and evaporation. Each method also has different ways of accomplishing the task. For instance, to ease extraction, our SERVPRO technicians make flood cuts providing easier access to water trapped in wall cavities. We also use a variety of equipment, including portable and truck-mounted water extractors depending on the amount of water we find at the loss site. We also use specialized equipment, including injectidry systems, which help remove water trapped in concealed areas such as subfloors without tearing down overlying materials.

Water loss incidents drive the humidity levels in a house to levels higher than usual. Humidity levels exceeding 50% not only make it uncomfortable for the occupants but also increase the chances of mold growth. Our SERVPRO technicians rely on advanced equipment such as low-grain refrigerant (LGR) dehumidifiers to extract excess moisture from the air. We also have air movers that help increase the evaporation rate quickening the drying process.

For proper management of a water loss site, call SERVPRO of Merrimack to help. You can reach us at (603) 262-9293 any time. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Water Removal in Amherst Homes Prevents Secondary Damage to the Structure and Contents

Plumbing issues often cause water damage and that’s why it’s crucial to inspect your home’s plumbing system regularly to ensure there are no issues with pipe joints and hoses.

The effects of water loss can be felt gradually or almost immediately depending on the volume of water involved and how long it sits in a home. To prevent further destruction of the structure and the contents of your home, working with experts who offer water removal services in Amherst is imperative. We can dry your items and home to salvage many possessions and prevent mold infestation and rust.

Water can cause the wooden furniture to get discolored, weaken or swell, or the paint on it to chip. It can also cause electronics to malfunction immediately or even lead to electrical hazards. If electronics like TVs, stereos, microwaves, and computers are exposed to water, we can unplug them, disconnect any backup batteries and remove trip breakers or fuses. Our crew can then remove the electronics from the affected area, use shop vacs to extract stagnant water from the floors and wipe excess water from the electronic equipment. If you suspect that the equipment is ruined, we can contact a competent electronics vendor to test and restore it if possible.

If water has intruded into electronic media like DVDs, and CD-ROMs, our crews can set up a dehumidification chamber to lower the relative humidity to 25%. We can work with companies that clean and repair electronic media. Water may also ruin books and other documents in your home. Our SERVPRO crew can save critical documents from getting lost completely. Acting quickly in the wake of a burst pipe or attic leak is essential to containing potential damages. A professional service with highly trained technicians could help to mitigate losses and avoid expensive replacements.

Requirements for water removal in Amherst can vary depending on the size and scale of the job at hand. However, using local services is useful in any size disaster because they reduce call-out times. SERVPRO has the resources to deal with larger scale restoration as well as minor issues involving water. Our remit is to act quickly to remove moisture from your home and thereby mitigate against costly permanent harm to structure or contents.

Restorers working on a clean water emergency can enter your property, remove debris, possessions and conduct vital safety checks. These checks could include alerting you to loose wiring, weakness in floors or ceiling as well as potential contamination hazards. SERVPRO provides personal protective equipment (PPE) to staff members allowing them to enter a flooded property safely, even where contaminated materials like raw sewage may be present.

A proper drying procedure needs establishing in the advent of a clean water emergency. If large amounts of water have migrated, we may set up smaller drying zones using physical barriers like plastic sheeting. These zones allow us to concentrate our drying efforts resulting in a smarter, more efficient service. Where large quantities of water are present throughout the home, SERVPRO mobilizes submersible gas powered pumps that transport water to nearby open sewer points. Once standing water levels drop below two inches, we can bring in water extraction units for targeted removal of residual moisture and pooling.

Our local service has access to national resources in the restoration of water-related property damages, contact SERVPRO of Merrimack at (603) 262-9293 to arrange service.

We Have The Equipment To Restore Your Merimack Home After A Water Damage Disaster

5/21/2019 (Permalink)

When water damage hit, our techs expedited the drying process after removing the water by drilling weep holes at the base of the wall.

Ensuring Effective Drying After Water Damage in Your Merrimack Home

Certain appliances in homes increase the risk of water damage. Many homeowners deal with water loss after a refrigerator leaks. This usually occurs when the refrigerator’s defrost drain has a clog or freeze. When this happens, you need to thaw the ice and use hot water to flush your drain.

After discovering water damage in your Merrimack home, it is crucial to hire a professional to remove the water and begin the restoration process within 48 hours. Companies that offer remediation services like SERVPRO can help you prevent excessive destruction and reduce the risk of fungus, mold, and bacteria multiplying in the affected areas.

To dry your home effectively, it is vital to ensure that air is moving naturally by opening windows and doors for better air circulation. You also need to open the cabinet and closet doors to speed up drying. Our technicians can use shop vacs to remove excess water from your home. Some of these vacuums are designed to remove water damage from rugs and carpets. We also use high-speed fans to increase air circulation to expedite drying.

Dehumidifying is the other crucial aspect of the drying process because it helps eliminate water vapor from the air. We have both large and portable dehumidifiers and they are most effective when used in a room with the windows and doors shut to keep humid outdoor air from entering the room. A dehumidifier in a closed room can minimize the relative humidity to a low of 20 percent, meaning that if your home has a wood floor, the dehumidifier can pull moisture from the wood.

Our SERVPRO technicians monitor the drying process closely and establish moisture content goals. We create the normal equilibrium moisture content (EMC) and the dry standard. Our technicians measure the moisture content of the items in the unaffected areas to come up with a dry standard. We can use a moisture meter to check the moisture content of baseboards, walls, ceilings, padding, furniture, subfloors and other water-damaged materials. Our goal is to dry a structure and its contents to make the damage look “Like it never even happened.”

When there is water loss in your home, SERVPRO of Merrimack is ready to assist you in drying the affected areas. Contact us anytime at (603) 262-9293 for prompt restoration services.

FAQ - SERVPRO Has the Answers About What You Should Know Concerning Water Damage in Merrimack and Amherst

FAQ questions Merrimack Homeowners Have the Questions and SERVPRO Has the Answers to Mold and Water Problems

8 Frequently Asked Questions That Worry Property Owners in Merrimack About Water Damage

1. How much does a water damage restoration cost?
A: SERVPRO provides a professional estimate after consulting with you free if charge. We document the damaged area, what components and possessions were damaged, and estimate the water mitigation cost. Many factors come into play like the time needed, the equipment deployed, and containment and barrier setups.

2. Are you submitting a claim with your insurance?
A: If you are submitting a claim, SERVPRO requires the claim number and the name of your insurance company. We can then directly interact with your insurer releasing you from undue stress. However, you are responsible for the deductible and a deposit if no coverage is available before we begin the restoration of your Merrimack property.

3. What product sanitizes and disinfects the affected elements after a water loss?
A:  We use SERVPRO's proprietary decontamination products on the stricken areas to reduce the likelihood of microbial growth and for cleanability. The chief decontaminant product is SERVPRO Oxide, an EPA registered chlorine dioxide based disinfectant and stabilizer. This chemical requires no personal protective equipment PPE during treatment, is safe for use on all surfaces, and of course for people and your pets.

4. Can I remain at home during the drying process?
A: The short answer is yes; if the residence is safe. The safety of our customers and employees is our number one priority. Each case is different depending on the severity of the damage and is evaluated on its own problems. We help you to remain in your residence when feasible. However, if deemed hazardous, we can suggest to your insurance company to provide you with a temporary relocation. The drying equipment can be loud, and usually must run for several days continuously during the dry-down period, to achieve our drying goals. This is your personal decision.

5. Can a SERVPRO team respond quickly to an emergency loss?
A: We average about 2 hours after receiving the phone call on site to do emergency services and start the recovery process right away. However, we do need a signed Service Authorization Form prior to beginning the mitigation.

6. What is the drying process for water damage?
A: The drying process begins with the crew stopping the water flow if it is on-going. The crew checks for any electrical hazards to avoid shocks or worse. Our technicians can extract any pooling water from the wet areas and use moisture measuring and detection equipment as well as psychrometrics to discover the moisture in the wall cavities and the air. The SERVPRO crew can formulate a drying plan to determine the best methods of restoration for your home. We can then place a variety of drying systems and equipment, including air movers and commercial grade dehumidifiers, to completely dry the materials and environment. The entire drying process typically takes about 3-5 days to complete. And we document the results for your carrier.

7. Does all water damage cause mold?
A:  Each water damaging event presents an opening for mold to grow from dormant spores or other microbial growth. The source and type of water (clean, gray, or black) the volume of the water, the ambient temperature, and the length of time the moisture has been present all have a direct bearing on the amount and types of microbial growth species. It is critical to take action as soon as you understand that a water damage loss has occurred.

8. How long before microbial growth starts to grow?
A: Depending upon the conditions, but in most cases, microbial growth can start within 72 hours after a water loss. Swiftly responding is crucial to prevent the spread of microbial and other organisms.

Trust SERVPRO for Prompt Mold and Water Damage Cleanup and Restoration

Disasters can occur at your residence when away on vacation. Washing machines are great for doing laundry, but when they fail and start leaking when the resident is not home, the water loss can be significant.

This water and mold damaged happened in East Merrimack, New Hampshire, when the supply line ruptured in our customer's home. Luckily for her, she returned to her residence in time to notice the damage and stopped the leak before it spread throughout the structure. However, the standing water had been there long enough causing some water damage and microbial growth.

The mold damaged the baseboards in the hallway, the living room, bedroom and laundry room closet. The carpets in the hallway also had moisture in them that showed the homeowner that she needed to call an expert team for help. She decided it was best to call SERVPRO to extract the water and remediate the mold infestation in her residence.

When our SERVPRO project manager arrived on site, he stated confidently that the water damage had been there for a while because of the mold found on the baseboards of the hallway and the saturated, weakened walls in the laundry room. The technicians first removed the residence’s contents to prevent further microbial growth to these items in her home. Once all the contents were removed, the project manager and his crew extracted the moisture from the carpet using specialized equipment. Air scrubbers were placed in the hallway to help purify the air along with LGR dehumidifiers to reduce moisture levels in the air and the walls. Both these pieces of equipment allowed for a quicker water restoration process. The crew used industry-leading, fully certified equipment to clean up and restore the property.

Selective deconstruction was then done to the walls of the hallway and the laundry room to stop the spread of the microbial growth and uncover the source of the growth. It is crucial for our technicians to find the origin of the mold growth and demolish only those walls to minimize costs and inconveniences while ensuring the safety of the residents.  The techs focused their attention on the hallway baseboards and the laundry room closet where the mold was most prevalent. Our AMRT techs applied an antimicrobial spray along the perimeters of the treated area to reduce the chance of future microbial growth. Mold colonies and spores once exterminated and removed, set the next phase--rebuilding to make our customers feel "Like it never even happened."

Our crew took about two days to complete the job, pleasing our customers that SERVPRO of Merrimack is effective and efficient. We always take pride in knowing that the owner of the building was very satisfied with the work done to the apartment complex. Rely on us, 24/7 to remove unwanted water along with microbial growth. 603) 262-9293

Milford Home Clean Water Leak Cause--Call SERVPRO for Removal and Drying

SERVPRO Assesses the Water Loss and then Executes an Action Plan for Recovery

Property and homeowners dread water damage and its disastrous aftereffects. Broken pipes, leaky roofs, clogged toilets are some of the causes of such incidents. Fortunately, there are professionals in Milford and are always ready to return your home or property to its preloss state.

Our SERVPRO technicians conduct a pre-inspection of your Milford property during water damage restoration to determine the amount and size of the water loss and decide on the best mitigation procedures. Not all water events are the same, which means we have to select processes that are best suited to the situation at hand.

There are three categories of water that we might come across when working for you. Category 1 is mostly clean water or water that causes no health risk to humans. It may be as simple as a sink overflow or water from a broken pipe. Gray water or category 2 is contaminated water that has the potential to cause health risks, such as water from broken toilet tank, or a washing machine leak. If clean water is allowed to stand on a carpet or other surface, after several days it may degrade to gray water. Black water is Category 3 and is often associated with sewage problems, flooding, and exterior contaminants. The water is unsanitary since it contains disease-causing microorganisms and bacteria.

Another classification that our SERVPRO technicians use is assessing the class of damage. For instance, class 1 damage is the least harmful and easy to repair. Class 2 damage entails damage to property and furniture such as damaged cushions and carpets. Class 3 and 4 damage are more severe and could require specialized and advanced water removal and restoration procedures. These water losses can be water leakage between floors causing multiple points needing water cleanup and drying.

Our SERVPRO crew often don Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during the remediation process since some safety concerns arise when dealing with such incidents. The selection of the PPE should include head, foot, and hand protection, hearing protection, disposable coveralls, disposable boots, respirators, and eye protection.

SERVPRO of Merrimack is a trusted leader in the industry, offering emergency services that meet the residential and commercial needs. Some of the services we provide include fire, storm, and mold damage. Call us at (603) 262-9293 and allow us to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Why Deodorization Counts During Water Cleanup In Milford

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

After experiencing a water damage event, there is a need to seek water cleanup services to return your property to its preloss state.

Why Deodorization Counts During Water Cleanup

After experiencing a water damage event, there is a need to seek water cleanup services to return your property to its preloss state. It all starts by extracting the high volumes of standing water which might be on your property, as well as the water which might be in the hard to reach areas. To track the moisture, we use devices such as infrared sensors. Odor removal is equally vital since the moisture problem may make organic contents to rot. We're going to discuss some of the deodorization techniques we use when attending to such events in Milford.

The source of the odors in your Milford property determines the odor removal procedures we use during water cleanup. For instance, our SERVPRO technicians use injection methods when it is necessary to dispense small quantities of the deodorant into spots in your upholstery or carpets. We do this by using either an injection needle or a pump. We prefer this technique when it is impractical to lift the carpet to access the backing material or padding.

Direct spraying is another deodorization technique that our SERVPRO technicians use during water damage restoration. In this process, we use powered sprayers or hand pumps to apply disinfectants. Since this method can wet surfaces, we use it when discoloration is unlikely or is not of great concern. To neutralize odor particles in the hard to reach areas, we can use wet fogging. In this method, we use ULV (ultra-low volume) foggers to dispense tiny deodorant particles into such areas. We are careful not to over-fog to prevent damaging furnishing with moisture. Where necessary, we use drop cloths to protect vulnerable surfaces.

Our SERVPRO technicians use appropriate safety gear to stay protected during deodorization. We use protective clothing, eye protection, chemical resistant gloves, and respirators. During fogging, pets and all people without the protective gear must be out of the site.

At SERVPRO of Merrimack, we use advanced cleaning and restoration equipment, and We're Faster To Any Size Disaster. Call us at (603) 262-9293 to benefit from our industry proven 24-hour emergency services.

SERVPRO Brings the Heavy Treatments Needed for Basement Water Removal in Amherst

Extracting Water Swiftly from Amherst Basements Mitigates Damages--Says SERVPRO

Amherst Basements Get Fast Water Loss Mitigation When SERVPRO Is Called

Some of the heaviest water removal work in Amherst that SERVPRO does can be attributed to basement flooding and pooling. As the lowest point in many local buildings, basements gather large volumes of water that require the sort of heavy machinery and manpower we typically reserve for only the most pressing and severe situations. We pledge to take every measure necessary to return your home to a livable, comfortable state, but those measures may include one or more of the procedures outlined below.

Water Extraction
Some of the most time-critical water removal work we do in Amherst may involve water extraction, the process whereby we use industrial-strength pumps to displace significant volumes of water in a short amount of time. Even light flooding may sometimes warrant the use of the types of motorized extraction tools used by SERVPRO professionals. We pump any water we can out to the street, where it can safely flow into a drainage system or low-lying area away from your home. If the water has specific contaminants, then we must pump it into containers for disposal off-site. Typically, we may also employ some of the vehicle-mounted pumps typically reserved for large commercial and residential spaces. Submersible, portable sump pumps are often used to begin bulk water extraction.

Drying
The potential for water damage does not go away as soon as we extract standing water. In the dark, isolated confines of a basement, any moisture still in the area can cause expensive damage for long after the initial disaster. We use a two-pronged approach to handle difficult drying situations. Portable, configurable air movers create strong directed air currents in the room to quickly dry out materials and surfaces. However, to finish the job, we also need to use dehumidifiers that collect airborne water droplets and place them in organized, manageable storage containers. With this flexible system, we can overcome basements of most shape or size, even when complex floor plans and difficult drying situations may be present. Weep holes may be drilled to extract water and residual moisture from cement blocks. We may recommend to our customer to install a permanent dehumidifier and sump pump. Dampness must be eliminated to help prevent the growth of mold colonies.

SERVPRO of Merrimack has the resources available to get your home back to normal faster and with less expense than you ever thought possible. Call us as soon as disaster strikes at (603) 262-9293.

Drying And Restoring A Wet Basement In Merrimack

Wet or Flooding Basement? Call SERVPRO for Help

Water Seepage and Intrusions Get Help from SERVPRO

Unless they have finished it out, most Merrimack homeowners do not spend much time in their basement except to wash clothes and put away the Christmas decorations. For most of the time, this benign neglect does not harm. After a storm or plumbing issue, however, it can lead to several costly problems.

A wet Merrimack basement can result in personal property loss, structural damage, and even mold. SERVPRO teams dry the basement as quickly as possible and stop water from becoming an issue again in the future to prevent this.

To start with, our technicians use pumps and extraction wands to remove standing water from the basement. Then, they lift and dry any carpets on the floor. If there are none, the team members set up air movers to blow warm, dry air over the surface of the floor to speed up the drying process. Once they begin, other members place a dehumidifier in the basement to draw water from the air and surrounding materials like drywall and personal property.

Now, one of our inspectors looks for where the water is leaking into the basement. If it is a minor leak, our specialists can repair it or even replace a connection. If the leak is a major issue, SERVPRO always recommends using a licensed plumber or contractor.

If the water is seeping in from the outside, it may be necessary to seal the basement. If the floor is unfinished dirt, we encapsulate it by first leveling the floor and then sealing it using polyethylene sheets to serve as a vapor barrier. Technicians push them into place and extend them up onto the walls, then seal the edges to the concrete using two-sided, foundation tape or polyurethane caulk.

If the basement has a concrete floor, our team uses the polyurethane caulk to seal any leaks or seeps and then cover the entire surface with hydraulic cement. They do the same for leaks and seeps discovered in the walls. These two sealants form an excellent bond against water getting into the basement again.

At SERVPRO of Merrimack, it is our goal to restore every wet basement to its original, dry condition. If you are dealing with this situation, or any other water problem in your home, call us today at (603) 262-9293. We are here for you.

Finding A Solution For Your Wet Merrimack Basement

Sump Pumps Mitigate and Can Prevent Water Damage to Basements in Merrimack--SERVPRO Advice

In Merrimack Basements, Water and Moisture Removal Are in the Field of SERVPRO Expertise

You might think that your basement gets built like a fortress, impenetrable and sturdy. Well, possibly the when your Merrimack house got constructed, but time has a way of wearing things down and causing them to fail in areas. Once even small amounts of water can penetrate portions of your foundation, the passing fluid breaks away and erodes more and more of the mortar joints holding the blocks together. Soon the small amount of water that could find its way in has become quite a high volume. The hollow cells of the block can also hold and hide large amounts of water and moisture.

Before you know it, you desperately need help combatting the wet basement area of your Merrimack home. While initially, the shock of pooling water in your basement (or even just excessive dampness) might seem overwhelming, when you know whom to call to help, the task is anything but insurmountable.

Many people are unaware of how professional restoration services can help them to overcome trouble they might experience in their basements. Our SERVPRO technicians are concerned primarily about getting the area dried out and restoring the damage to vulnerable areas that have allowed for water penetration. The restoration job itself is not complete without providing lasting solutions to keep the same thing from happening again shortly.

While instances of flooding in your basement are best remedied with the use of equipment like sump pumps, preparing for this kind of gear is something that is also best left to professional outfits. Proper installation requires the flooring in the basement to be adequately graded to move water to the pump's location, even though most of the work that a sump pump does is removing water that pools along your home (or underneath it) and prevent it from getting into the basement.

In many cases, even with the source of the water damage handled by our SERVPRO technicians, it is advisable to utilize dehumidification equipment in the basement. This device pulls the moisture out of the air and can prevent compounding disasters like lingering water damage with fungal growth. Sufficient ventilation and a keen eye can prevent problems from occurring.

Finding the right solution for your wet basement is not a decision that you have to make alone. You can trust the experience and professionalism of the technicians we have at SERVPRO of Merrimack. Our emergency response team is available 24/7 by calling (603) 262-9293.

Water Removal from Your Wood Flooring in Amherst

10/22/2017 (Permalink)

Drying out wood flooring properly requires expertise that our certified technicians possess. Contact SERVPRO to begin drying out and restoring.

Team SERVPRO Removes Water From Your Property Quickly and Efficiently for Best Results

When you have had flooding of any kind, particularly over wooden flooring, in your Amherst home, it is essential that you get the water extracted right away. The longer it remains, the more damage is done to your floor. Wood contains moisture naturally, but it expands when it absorbs excess moisture, and the boards can start to warp. Eventually, buckling can take place, and if the moisture remains long enough, you must replace your floor.

When needed, water removal in your Amherst home needs to be done right away. The best thing to do is to trust the professionals at SERVPRO to help you, rather than trying to do it yourself. Our staff has the tools and knowledge to efficiently take care of the problem quickly and save your wood floors.

We waste no time after arriving at your home in extracting the water. If there is any carpeting over it, it must be removed first, along with the padding. Finished wood flooring sometimes returns to its usual shape once drying is done and can be restored. Your floors should not be sanded until they are totally dry since drying continues and could cause the floor to expand or contract further.

SERVPRO techs may need to put dehumidifiers or air movers in the area to ensure that the floor is dried completely. Then, the floor can be refinished and/or sanded. We use a nonpenetrating moisture meter to find any wet areas, and Teflon coated probes of a penetrating moisture meter to figure out how much moisture content is in the layers at the wettest point. We explain all our procedures first, so you know what we are doing and why.

Our machines for drying are checked on daily to make sure they are drying the floor properly. We may need to reposition them to get the most efficient drying time.

SERVPRO of Merrimack is well-trained in drying your wooden floors after a flooding incident. If you reside in the areas of Amherst, Milford, or Merrimack, give us a call right away at (603) 262-9293.

SERVPRO Can Help with Water Proofing Your Amherst Basement

SERVPRO Can Utilize Many Techniques to Help with Moisture and Water Conditions in Basements and Crawl Spaces

Basements usually serve two purposes. There is extra storage for holiday decorations and the like or as an extra living area or bedroom. It works out well for homeowners until water begins leeching in from the outside of the structure, making it unlivable. Unfortunately, this is common for many basements in New Hampshire.

Removing standing water from a relatively small area is simple, but it is only a temporary measure. SERVPRO understands that a permanent solution to a wet, Amherst basement requires more than just pumping out water and setting up a dehumidifier. If we do not block the source of water, more leaks and damage are going to happen. To accomplish this, we recommend waterproofing or encapsulating the cinder blocks which make up the foundation along with the basement walls and floors.

Our technicians start the waterproofing process by filling seams and cracks with hydraulic cement. This sealant is an excellent barrier against further leaks. We then apply masonry cement over the basement walls. This coating is waterproof and establishes an efficient seal against seepage and leaks through cracks too small for the naked eye.

We recommend waterproofing the outside of the foundation as well. We carefully expose the outside walls and apply a thick layer of liquid rubber or similar product. This sealant helps to provide a dry basement against extreme weather and flooding unless the foundation is somehow cracked or the house shifts off its original position.

Encapsulation is the preferred method for basements with a dirt floor or smaller areas like crawlspaces. Technicians install a water vapor barrier by reinforcing polyethylene sheets with a polyester mesh. This approach effectively seals off the walls and floor from moisture bleeding into the basement. Our team then secures the sheets and mesh into place using a polyurethane caulk or two-sided, foundation tape. If needed, they also install a frame that holds everything in place. For difficult environments with excess humidity, it is standard procedure to install a permanent dehumidifier. Encapsulation is an excellent, low-cost method to secure the basement for additional storage while also improving indoor air quality.

Preventing water intrusion does more than just add storage or an extra room. Proper waterproofing and encapsulation also increase the value. If you have water in your basement currently or want to prevent future intrusion, call SERVPRO of Merrimack today at (603) 262-9293. We are here to help.

Basement Waterproofing Helps Prevent Water Damage in Merrimack Properties--New and Old

SERVPRO Provides Solutions to Water Damaged Basements and Crawl Spaces

A consistently wet basement feels and smells unpleasant, on top of posing health risks to your family and diminishing the value of your home. If left untreated for too long, excessive moisture can cause damage to your floors, walls, foundation, structural integrity, and even damage your roof.

Get professional help when dealing with wet basement issues in your Merrimack home. While some problems have a simple solution, others require a more aggressive approach. A quality restoration company can help you decide which solution best fits your situation.

SERVPRO technicians often find that downspouts and roof gutters play a significant role in wet basement issues. Improper installation or damaged downspouts and gutters give water access to your home. However, gutter extensions, additional drain pipes, and proper grading can help eliminate the problem and improve runoff.

If the problem persists after reshaping the landscape and installing additional drainage, have your basement inspected by professionals and get the help you need. SERVPRO’s expertly trained technicians can plug gaps, cracks, and other openings with hydraulic cement or polyurethane caulking.

Installing additional drains such as footing drains, or a curtain drain can help with water problems caused by ground water. These drains help divert water traveling underground away from your home. If standing water is the obvious culprit, SERVPRO technicians can install interior drain systems, sump pumps, and backflow valves eliminating damaging problems and protecting your home better.

Waterproofing the walls of your basement is also an option. There are concrete waterproof coatings available that permanently adhere to concrete or masonry walls. You can also use silicate-based concrete sealers on painted surfaces in finished basements.

If you simply want to get straight into the best possible solution to your problem, basement encapsulation services involve installing vapor barriers throughout to eliminate moisture problems. While usually the most expensive alternative, basement encapsulation helps prevent a variety of common basement issues while also increasing energy efficiency, comfort, and indoor air quality of your home. Always consider a fixed dehumidifier to reduce the moisture content of the building elements and air in your basement.

SERVPRO of Merrimack can offer you these services and much more. Take advantage of our experiences and call today to discuss available options and get the help you need to address current problems in your home. (603) 262-9293

Bodies of Water in Milford Can Cause Water Damage, Be Prepared

Flooding is a concern for our area of New Hampshire. The Souhegan River does not crest its banks more often than other waterways, but when it does, the results can be disastrous for the community.

Water removal from your Milford home can be an extensive process. That is why SERVPRO also responds to calls for an inspection that helps you prepare your home before the worst can happen. Our inspector also provides a list of steps you can take to protect your home from the next storm before we arrive.

One of the most common means water gets into your residence are the drain gutters which become choked with leaves and other debris before the rainy season starts. Gutters need to be check once a month and then every 2-3 weeks once Autumn arrives, and the leaves begin to fall. Water that doesn't drain properly runs down into the foundation. Ice dams can be prevented with sufficient attic insulation.
Maintaining the drainage system also means keeping it intact. Gutters that have separated from the roof allow water to pour down the side of your home uninterrupted. This flow is the method by which water finds its way into your attic. Reinforcing the gutters and drainpipes is something you can do, or we can handle for you after the inspection.

When the weather is severe enough to overcome preparations, we maintain a 24-hour response team to put your home back together. Training for our technicians meets the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification standards and comprehensive corporate training. Each team maintains an extensive inventory of pumps to remove water regardless of the size of the house. If the power is still knocked out, they also have a series of generators that provide a constant source of electricity as we work to return your home to its original state. With this equipment in place, we complete most gross amounts of water removal in a single day or less.

To ensure elimination of every trace of the water, team members use water extraction wands and other tools as well as dehumidifiers to draw out any remaining moisture. They accomplish this to protect flooring and walls as well as fabrics and other personal property. Extraction also lowers the air moisture content which stops mold growth.

The weather looks good for the next week, so before the next rain causes Birch Brook to rise, call SERVPRO of Merrimack to schedule an inspection to prevent water damage to your home. Contact us at (603) 262-9293 today.

This flooded basement was caused by heavy rain.

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your Merrimack basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more
