Who Owns the Land?

The ownership of the region was under dispute in the late 17th century. The Massachusetts Bay Colony and the Province of New Hampshire were both making claims. That didn’t stop European settlers from coming and making it their home. It was good land, and people were eager to make a new life for themselves. In 1746 the boundary lines were re-examined, and the land in Massachusetts was granted to New Hampshire. The town was known as Naticook at that time.

A Town is Born

When the town was incorporated on April 2, 1746, it took on the name of Merrymac.  The current spelling was used later. When Governor Benning Wentworth issued the charter, roughly 50 families were living in the area. Native Americans flourished in the area as well. They included:

Places of Historical Importance

Like many New England towns, Merrimac is rich in history. One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Matthew Thornton, lived his entire life in Merrimack. Today, Thornton’s home, now the Common Man Restaurant, and the Matthew Thornton cemetery are still standing and welcome visitors.

The Granite State Winter Challenge for Amherst Residents Starts in 2021

The Granite State Winter Challenge is a new initiative by the New Hampshire Governor's Council taking place in Amherst. The challenge involves participating in thirty minutes of healthy activity every day from the 1st of January through to March. This program incorporates late-comers, with many participants posting their progress and their live Facebook feed actions. The virtual event occurs by registering with the council, which accepts late registrations from the 31st of January. Certain activities are hosted in groups, such as the first-day walk in the New Hampshire State Park. There are no costs involved with registering, but residents are encouraged to actively apply themselves, helping others with activity ideas and posting their progress. 

• The Granite State Challenge runs through February and March.

Merrimack remained a relatively small community until the 19th century, made up of four distinct villages, including South Merrimack, Thorntons Ferry, Reeds Ferry, and Merrimack Village. However, with the invention and subsequent mass production of automobiles, it transformed into a commuter belt for those working in the larger urban areas like Boston. One of the largest employers in the area is Anheuser-Busch, which runs Budweiser breweries that are open to the public for tours and tastings. There are several excellent state parks, including the Wildcat Falls Park and the Twin Bridge Park. The proximity of mountain regions and the Merrimack Valley ensures a passing trade of outdoor enthusiasts who can take the opportunity to go skiing during the winter months and hiking trails and cycle rides.
